This week on Garden Time Tips Eric brought to the show hardy tropical plants that are drought tolerant and never need to be covered on a frosty night. Ancanthus mollis or Bears Breeches is a large leafed perennial from the Mediteranean that stays green all winter. The leaves are big like an Elephant Ear Philodendron followed by three foot spikes of purple, green and white flowers. The Bears Breeches goes dormant in the hot dry summer making it perfect for our climate. The Fatsia japonica or Japanese aralia have large deeply lobed leaves that stay green through a Tucson winter. The Trachyacarpus fortunei or Windmill palm is one of the hardiest palms around, so hardy it even grows in Vancouver Canada. To add fragrance to your winter garden use Osmanthus fragrans or Sweet Olive it blooms through the winter with small white flowers that smell like Apricot.
