What ! BlueBerries in Tucson
Yes, Blueberries will grow in Tucson. If you have ever grown Camelias or Gardenias you can grow Blueberries. The Southern Highbush Blueberry is the best for our hot summer -mild winter climate since they are native to the southeastern United States (Georgia,Florida) and can tolerate our heat. These hardy Blueberries do not need cold winters to set fruit and are self fertile.Growers are now planting acre after acre of Blueberries in the central valley of Southern California to keep up with the increasing popularity of Fresh Blueberries. Like Camelias and Gardenias Blueberries prefer acidic soil, so adding a lot of organic material will help to keep the soil acidic and your blueberries happy. Once blueberries are established they are mildly drought tolerant and really only need regular water when they are in fruit production.
